Accommodation
There are a number of bunks available at Waimate Folk Festival. Rooms have either 8 or 12 bunks in each of them. Rooms have heaters which are able to be used in the evenings, and no power points in 8-bunk rooms. If you have friends attending the festival, let us know and we can aim to put you in the same rooms as each other. Bring a woolly hat and a hot water bottle and all your bedding.
There is plenty of space for campers, caravans, and housetrucks.

Some History Whitestone / Waimate,
Performers / Participant Led.
Although small, the winter festival has been steady in popularity since it began in 1994 as 'Whitestone' in Herbert, Otago. Waimate Winter Folk Festival is a great occasion for performers of all ages and skills, from the beginner to the seasoned professional. A small community of repeat attendees and the often challenging weather means that this festival is friendly and welcoming. The fun experienced by all of the 120 or so maximum participants is valued by many who return year after year.
In 2015 Waimate Folk Festival changed its format so that all festival content is filled by it's attendees. While we have hired guest artists and performers in the past, we now focus on an all-inclusive, participative festival.
On occasion, artists, duos and bands may ask to perform a set at the festival. At times we are happy to arrange this, though they are still considered punters and register for the festival alongside everyone else.
If you are interested in performing at Waimate Folk Festival, be sure to buy a festival pass, and get in touch with the Festival Director to enquire about a time slot.
If you are a musician looking for paid gigs and festivals, there is a list of other festivals at: www.kiwifolk.com
In 2016 the Whitestone Winter Folk Festival changed it's name to the Waimate Folk Festival reflect the new location in sunny Waimate. In 2023 we added "Winter" to differentiate from the new Summer Folk Camp at Waimate.
Registration includes three nights accommodation (or camping, for the hardy) and continuous entertainment and workshops from Saturday morning to Sunday evening (and the wee hours of Monday). Day passes are also available.

Previous Years
I have attended most of the Whitestone Festivals since its inception in 1994 and have always loved the intimacy of the small, friendly festival. This year was no exception. Driving down from Christchurch after work on the Friday is part of the fun; it’s getting dark as we leave and a stop in Temuka for fish and chips is obligatory. Read more...
